Why It's a Great Opportunity: The Appraiser in Training provides you the opportunity to directly impact your local community by appraising real/personal property.
You will play an integral role in establishing fair and equitable market value for tax purposes within Pierce County.
You will be part of a solid team of Appraisers that are the face of the county, conducting inspections while developing and nurturing strong relationships with a diverse group of customers.
The team takes a technology first approach in the inspection process by routing and performing inspections on County provided iPads.
This position is 50% or more in the field.

We are looking to grow our own Appraisers and we do that through our Appraiser in Training process.
With some experience in real property values such as inspections, cost estimating, insurance, real estate, construction, and appraisal, you will work alongside a seasoned team of Appraisal Professionals as you develop your skills.
Once you successfully complete probation and obtain your accreditation, you will promote to an Appraiser 1 position.

The Assessor-Treasurer's Office is responsible for the mass appraisal of real and personal property in Pierce County for purposes of assessing property taxes.

How to be Successful in the Role: This position requires you to work quickly and efficiently while making sound daily decisions and judgments.
The ability to learn quickly, interact with the public, and work independently in a fast-paced work environment will help you succeed in this role.
Additionally, previous experience in using appraisal software is preferred.
Throughout the training process you will meet with an Appraiser 2 regularly to set expectations and goals for yourself, receive frequent feedback, and quality control your work.
Your Future in this Role: The Assessor Treasurer's Office is dedicated to your success at becoming adept at appeals, sales validations, and other specialized work.
You will have additional training/educational opportunities through organizations, such as the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), the Department of Revenue (DOR), and the Washington State Association of County Assessors (WSACA).
Your work will directly impact your community and it offers a great foundation for future positions within the Assessor Treasurer's Office and Pierce County.
Position Summary Conduct property site visits for the purpose of gathering characteristic data and physical verification of business assets.
Assist Appraisers by taking notes of property and its amenities in relation to surrounding properties.
Measure improvements.
Verify, collect, and record land and building characteristics Record data accurately on field record forms.
Draw scale plan of buildings using current office sketch software.
Research and assist appraisers in analyzing sales, rentals, and values of comparable properties in the area.
Assist appraisal staff in preparing of value defense for hearings before the County Board of Equalization and the State Board of Tax Appeals.
May attend hearings as required.

Qualifications Two or more years of work experience in real property, such as inspections, cost estimating, insurance, real estate, construction, appraisal, or other directly related field which provides a knowledge of real property values and appraisal techniques.
Must be able to obtain accreditation by the State Department of Revenue as a Real Property Appraiser and advance to Appraiser 1 within one (1) year of employment.
Additional education or related experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements on a year for year basis.
Must have a current and valid Washington State driver's license when appointed to position.
The Appraiser in Training serves a one (1) year initial probationary period.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment, the applicant will need to authorize and complete a background check.
