JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, teaches and instructs children of varying abilities, including those with special needs, disabilities, or delays in academic, social, behavioral, and other educational skill areas; counsels, disciplines, and supervises to meet the individual needs of assigned students based on adopted guidelines and the rules and regulations governing early childhood special education and/or early intervention services; evaluates student performance and progress and makes necessary referrals to other early intervention/special education personnel.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of students of varying abilities.
Plans an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups that may include at risk or children with special needs, disabilities, or delays; prepares lesson plans collaboratively with other special education/early intervention and classroom personnel; assists in integrating Muckleshoot language and culture in the classroom setting.
Implements established program or curriculum objectives as adapted and modified for children with special needs, disabilities, or delays.
Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct; makes referrals for assistance where appropriate.
Confers with students, parents or guardians and other staff to provide guidance and evaluation and to encourage student achievement.
Establishes classroom goals and objectives appropriate to the early childhood special education student population and their individual education programs in conformance with courses of study specified by State and Tribal regulations and guidelines.
Evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents/guardians or other agencies when necessary.
Collects and interprets a variety of data; implements and evaluates individual family service/education plans (IFSP/IEP’s); provides reports for administrative purposes.
Directs the activities of assigned non-certified personnel; attends to or directs staff to attend to the physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs of students; monitors conditions and behavior.
Attends and participates in required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary.
Requisitions, stores and maintains an appropriate inventory of textbooks, instructional materials, supplies and equipment.
Supervises students in a variety of educational settings.
Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.
Plans, organizes, and develops a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual or small groups of students.
Uses good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students.
Maintains an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment.
Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time.
Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION: Required: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, from an accredited college or university.
A minimum of two (2) years early childhood special education teaching experience with children ages birth to six years of age with emphasis in learning disabilities, behavior management, and inclusive teaching; must have knowledge of child development, sensory integration, strong parent communication skills, and be a collaborative team member.
Special Requirements: Must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements.
Must be able to obtain satisfactory results on a pre-employment physical examination, including tuberculosis screening.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION: Skilled In: Designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of achievement; adapting curricula and programs to meet the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs of special education students; effective communication with students, parents, or guardians, staff and administrators; working with children in an understanding, patient, receptive and confident manner; organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students; following written and oral instructions; managing student behavior; using standard office equipment, including personal computer.
Knowledge of: Concepts of child development and developmental behavior characteristics; effective behavior management techniques; rules and procedures for child/student safety; non-visual instruction techniques; non-aural, non-verbal communication techniques; rules and regulations governing special education.
Ability to: Communicate effectively; work with students in a positive and confident manner; observe safe work practices; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; arrive to work in a timely manner; attend required training; maintain confidentiality; adapt and be flexible to changing work priorities; work with constant interruptions; utilizing a variety of equipment used in the care and handling of students with severe disabilities; prepare and maintain accurate records.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and talk or hear.
The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
Licenses or Certifications Required: Washington State Teaching Certification with Early Childhood Special Education endorsement.
A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
A valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR certificate and Food Handler’s permit may be required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
